Textual analysis of Billboard music magazine
Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of a men looking directly at the camera. The photograph is a medium long shot showing his head, shoulders, and waist. It looks like he is sitting on a step; however the step is not visible, his hands are together and his knees are visible in the shot. The background of the photograph is black, with a light shade of black at the top, and the photograph covers the whole of the magazine. Behind this man is the billboard masthead, and in front are three mastheads. A bar code is visible in the bottom left hand corner.
Masthead:
The Billboard masthead is very attractive and stands out and appeals to the audience, as its white with a white backdrop. The font used is a sons-serif font and all the letters are bold and the first letter is a capital b as all the others letters are lower case with none of the letters joined up together. Some of the letters have been colour in like the o, which is coloured in green however you can only slightly see it, the a is coloured in blue while the d is coloured in green. The masthead head is a typical American thing as the American music industry is based on getting artist in the billboards, as it’s a way of celebrating music. All the musicians in this magazine are musicians that are at the very top of the American music industry whether it’s past or present or event the future.
Character:
The character that appears on the front cover is American artist Flo Rida.
Composition:
He is posed in a relax and composed posture, with him slumped and not sitting up straight leading to an indication that it’s a cool look that he is going for.
Costume:
His clothing is of a green/brown looking cotton polo shirt along with a blue pair of jeans. Also included in the shot were a gold watch on his left wrist and a necklace and a brace on his right arm matching the same colour as the necklace along with and ear ring in his left ear. He has tattoos on both arms, along the big shades to cover his eyes. The costume is very similar to what he wears during some of his music videos. His hair looks freshly trimmed.
Non-Verbal Communication:
His Non-verbal communication is very cool but calm, as he flexes his muscles to try and look tough. He is looking directly at the camera.
Lighting:
The lighting is very key in this photograph as the background is a dark background so to make him stand out against the dark black and the light black there has to be high lighting, which then erases the error of the dark colours and the photograph colliding to give the magazine this perfect picture.
Setting:
There is very little setting however the background looks like their could be a shutter behind this artist.
Cover-lines:
The main cover-line that relates to this photograph says: “Flo Rida”. This is making a reference to him, as he is on the front cover of the magazine. It also makes references to the fact that he came round to the digital music’s biggest week. Also it could reference to the fact that he is an leading American artist and this weeks addition which was issued on the 21st march 2009 could mean that its just focusing on him as this was the year when his music was starting to spread across the world and leading to the fact that he had a big impact in the American music industry. There isn’t many cover lines on this front cover. But the other cover line says “SXSW SPECIAL” which doesn’t really say much and is hard to describe. There also a puff on the left hand side of the magazine including other artist such Jamie Foxx, Miley Cyrus.
Target audience:
The most likely target audience is going to be anyone really who has a taste in Hip-Hop music but to generalise this the population will probably between the ages of 16-18 year olds, so basically teenagers, but this is not being bias and saying that only this age group can read this magazine older people can read it too, it depends on the type of music and who is on the front cover. However the target audience could also be Americans as the Billboards is an American music thing, where they have the Billboard awards.
