Vibes Contents page Textual Analysis

Vibes Contents page:
·         There are two pictures on this contents page one centred in the middle of the page while the second was in the right hand bottom corner while the text is spread along the right hand column  of the contents page with a bit of text on the left hand side of the page.
·         The two pictures are of American Artist Rick Ross.
·         The relationship between the text and the photo is that the text on the left hand side is directly talking about Rick Ross giving us a indication that he has had a bad pasted while the text on the right hand side is about the Hip hop  scene with artists like the Dream and Bow Wow being mentioned
·         With a black man on the contents page suggests that the music industry in America mainly consist of black American artists.

Vibes Contents page Textual Analysis (Eminem)

Vibes contents page
·          There is just one main picture on the contents page setting the background for the magazine contents page.
·         The page is structured with one large photograph which dissents as the background as with the features are on the right hand side of the contents page.
·          The man in the photograph is of a young, white American artist Eminem who’s genres involve Hip-Hop and R’n’B, who targets a population of young people, people who listens to his type of music.
·         The relationship between the photograph and the text is that even know there is a large photo their still is plenty of room for the text and for the features.
·         With a young white R’n’B star suggests there is diversity in the American music industry as there are different ethnicities all working together as one.

Vibes Contents page:
·         There is one main picture in which sets the back drop to the magazine. This picture is a large picture which dissents into not just being a picture but also the background for the contents page.
·         The picture is structured so that it sets the background for the contents page and shows the importance of having this artist on the contents page.
·         The person/artist that has been photograph is of Kanye West who is an successful American artist  who specialises in Hip-Hop and R’n’B  which targets a younger generation of people such as teenagers but not escaping the fact that people older then teenagers could also listen to his sort of genres.
·         The relationship between the text and the picture is that there is still plenty of space for the text to be place even though the photograph is a large one. However the text does seemed compact and pressed together.
·         Also the picture has a big V behind the photograph showing the audience what type of magazine it is, it’s a smart tactical way of displaying and showing it’s a Vibes magazine.
·         You could also say that the clothing that Kanye West is wearing is sort of matching the background especially his shirt.
·         From this Vibes magazine you see that the magazine doesn’t  just focuses on music it focus on other issues such as fashion.

Textual analysis of XXL music magazine

Textual Analysis: Best Life magazine
Denotation:  The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of a man looking directly at the camera along with a female looking directly at camera aswell. It is a medium close up showing both of there heads, shoulders and abit of there waist. They are both standing with the male with his hand in his pockets while the female is holding an object in her right hand. The background of the photograph is black and the photograph covers the whole magazine cover. Behind the male and female is the XXL masthead and in front of them are two separate cover-lines in white. The photographed names of the two people on the cover are in white. A bar code is visible in the bottom left corner.
Masthead: The XXL masthead is very distinctive and stands out as the XXL is white with a red background. The font used is sons-serif and the lettering is bold capitals. The font used connotes American culture as American has an energetic music industry with lots of powerful artists who all share the same passion and talent. All the musicians who have appeared in or on the cover of XXL have had a reputations of having a combination of R’n’B, Rap and Hip Hop.
Characters: The cover photograph is of successful American R’n’B and Hip Hop stars Nicki Minaj and Drake.
Composition: They are both of them are situated in a peaceful manner showing of there dominance.
Costume:  Her clothing is very unique and different to what others would wear, as she has got leopard gloves on both hands to match her leopard skirt. The clothing he is wearing is plain but stylish and he is wearing army style jacket with a white t-shirt and a dark pair of jeans.
NVC:  Their Non-verbal communication is very dominant as he is standing with his shoulders back hands in his pocket approach looking directly at the camera while she is looking directly at the camera but with her head slanted at an angle.
Lighting:  The lighting is very high key as the background is black the lighting has to be key to help show the dominance of these to characters.
Setting: There is very little setting so because of this its hard to established where the setting actual is.
Cover-lines:  The main cover-line that relates to there photograph says “Domination”. This is making a reference to the music that these two artists have produced over the last year or two, as they have both taken the music industry by storm and are two of Americans leading artists, not just in American but globally. Also the fact that both artist can rap and sing aswell is raw talent as some artist only stick with one certain genres this could also mean that these two artists are ready to take over the whole music industry and be the best artist that ever live. With these two artists on the cover this could mean that this magazine has not long go come into the market.
Target Audience:
The mostly likely target audience will be R’n’B and Hip Hop fans who have a taste in this type of music, and both male and female. These people are likely to be interested in the music industry and up to date with the music in today’s society.

Textual analysis of Billboard music magazine

Textual analysis of Billboard music magazine
Denotation:
The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of a men looking directly at the camera. The photograph is a medium long shot showing his head, shoulders, and waist. It looks like he is sitting on a step; however the step is not visible, his hands are together and his knees are visible in the shot. The background of the photograph is black, with a light shade of black at the top, and the photograph covers the whole of the magazine. Behind this man is the billboard masthead, and in front are three mastheads. A bar code is visible in the bottom left hand corner.
Masthead:
The Billboard masthead is very attractive and stands out and appeals to the audience, as its white with a white backdrop. The font used is a sons-serif font and all the letters are bold and the first letter is a capital b as all the others letters are lower case with none of the letters joined up together. Some of the letters have been colour in like the o, which is coloured in green however you can only slightly see it, the a is coloured in blue while the d is coloured in green. The masthead head is a typical American thing as the American music industry is based on getting artist in the billboards, as it’s a way of celebrating music. All the musicians in this magazine are musicians that are at the very top of the American music industry whether it’s past or present or event the future.
Character:
The character that appears on the front cover is American artist Flo Rida.
Composition:
He is posed in a relax and composed posture, with him slumped and not sitting up straight leading to an indication that it’s a cool look that he is going for.
Costume:
His clothing is of a green/brown looking cotton polo shirt along with a blue pair of jeans. Also included in the shot were a gold watch on his left wrist and a necklace and a brace on his right arm matching the same colour as the necklace along with and ear ring in his left ear. He has tattoos on both arms, along the big shades to cover his eyes.  The costume is very similar to what he wears during some of his music videos. His hair looks freshly trimmed.
Non-Verbal Communication:
His Non-verbal communication is very cool but calm, as he flexes his muscles to try and look tough. He is looking directly at the camera.
Lighting:
The lighting is very key in this photograph as the background is a dark background so to make him stand out against the dark black and the light black there has to be high lighting, which then erases the error of the dark colours and the photograph colliding to give the magazine this perfect picture.
Setting:
There is very little setting however the background looks like their could be a shutter behind this artist.
Cover-lines:
The main cover-line that relates to this photograph says:  “Flo Rida”. This is making a reference to him, as he is on the front cover of the magazine.  It also makes references to the fact that he came round to the digital music’s biggest week.  Also it could reference to the fact that he is an leading American artist and this weeks addition which was issued on the 21st march 2009 could mean that its just focusing on him as this was the year when his music was starting to spread across the world and leading to the fact that he had a big impact in the American music industry. There isn’t many cover lines on this front cover. But the other cover line says “SXSW SPECIAL” which doesn’t really say much and is hard to describe.  There also a puff on the left hand side of the magazine including other artist such Jamie Foxx, Miley Cyrus.
Target audience:
The most likely target audience is going to be anyone really who has a taste in Hip-Hop music but to generalise this the population will probably between the ages of 16-18 year olds, so basically teenagers, but this is not being bias and saying that only this age group can read this magazine older people can read it too, it depends on the type of music and who is on the front cover. However the target audience could also be Americans as the Billboards is an American music thing, where they have the Billboard awards.

Textual analysis of Q music magazine

Textual Analysis of Q magazine
Denotation:  The magazine cover consists of two coloured photographs of group males who are looking directly at the camera while the other photograph is of a male who is looking directly at the camera and pointing directly at the camera.  It is a close up of the group showing all the band members other then one who head is slightly cut off. While the other photograph of the male of his own is close up aswell the reader seeing his mysterious look and him pointing his finger. The photographed groups name is in bold while the male on his own is in standard font, but his group name is bold. There are two other cover-lines which are in black and white. The bar code is visible on the right hand side of the magazine.
Masthead:  Q’s Masthead is very distinctive and stands as the background is red with the actual Q being white. The font used is sons-serif and the letter is of capitals. All the musicians that’s feature on or in this magazine have a reputation of having rock and roll lifestyles.
Characters: The cover photographs consist of the band U2 and Brandon Flowers from the band The Killers, who have been around
Composition:  The bands are posed in a relaxed kind of way but showing their seriousness while the male on his own is posed in a dominant way.
Costume: The clothing of the band U2 is very old fashion and looks like the photograph was taken years ago, with one member of the band wearing a sleeveless top while another member is wearing a shirt, along with another wearing a black jumper and the male at the front is wearing a black blazer with a brown strip on either side, with two band members wearing cowboy hats which back in those days could have been the fashion. The male on his own has taken a more modern approach with him wearing a black tuxedo showing that the times have change along with the fashion industry.
NVC: The male on his own, Non-verbal communication is very dominant as he is pointing his finger with a very no fear expression on his face. While the bands have taken a more relaxed approach as they have a care free pose for the camera.
Lighting:  The lighting is high key as the male in tuxedos want to be the dominant figure on the front cover, while the lighting for the band members is very high key aswell as the photograph is meant to display daytime.
Setting: Their is very little setting however  the blue background could indicated the peacefulness  and togetherness that the band are trying to show. While the white background  shows the dominance that Brandon Flowers has as black and white are opposite.
Cover-lines: The main cover-line that relates to the photographs of the male on his own says “Brandon Flowers makes his point”, this indicates that he is fed up with something and has had enough of holding his emotions in and wants to let it out once and for all.  However the other  cover-lines on the front cover are of  the U2 band where there is a 27 page special about their inside story and there new album.
Target Audience: The Likely target audience would be male and females and targeting the older generation, so the aged group would most probably between the ages of 25-40, but that’s not stopping anyone younger from purchasing the magazine, as it depends on people’s taste of music, as the Q magazine has a heavy rock background.

Textual analysis of Vibe music magazine

Vibes music magazine
Denotation : The magazine cover consists of a colour photograph of American R’n’B superstar Chris Brown who is looking direclty at the camera. The photo is a medium long shot showing his head, arms and waist. He is standing, leaning on a concerete wall with one hand in his left pocket while the other hand is half in his other pocket. The background illsutrates a dull effect as we cant really see the background other then a dull red, durberry colour which makes Chris Browns red shirt stand out in this front cover. There are seven cover lines in red, white , black and green with very little space between them. A bar code is visible in the left bottom corner.
Masthead: Vibes masthead is bold, with the masthead being white. The font used is a sons serif, with the lettering being all in capitals with large gaps between the lettering. The bold masthead suggest that the magazine is trying to create some sort of energy between the readers and all the musicians that use or read vibe are associated with R’n’B or Hip Hop.
Character: The cover photograph is of a huge R’n’B star who goes by the name as Chris Brown.
Composition: He is situated in a very slugish way possibly indicating that he doesn’t care. However with his hands in his pockets and two fingers sticking out this shows a gangster life style as his right hand shows this, as this could be meant as a gun sign.
Costume: His clothing is very plain and simple with dark jeans and a red t-shirt, along with all the bling such as the watch, the bracelet and the gold necklace, Along with the black baseball hat. The costume is to appeal to the target audience who are  most likely to be teenagers. The costume also represents the way some people dress in todays society.
NVC: His Non verbal communication is very gangster like, as his hat is titled at an angle on his head with him looking direclty at the camera. However from this, this could indicate that this is how people who like this sort of genre dress.
Lighting: The lighting is high key as the photograph is meant to show daytime but also to put the focus on Chris Brown as he is a leading aritsit in the world of Hip Hop and R’n’B.
Setting: There is very little setting and its hard to tell what the setting is of.
Cover-lines: The main cover-lines thast relate to the photograph says “IS THAT CHRIS BROWN”. This  is making reference to the music industry, as the industry along with his fans may have forgot about him as there was a controversial case against him last year as it was allegated that he beat up Rihanna, which he was found guilty of, which in a way runied his career as the outside world turned against him for the sickening things he did to Rihanna who is now one of the worlds leading artist.  The other artists mentioned on the cover-lines are usher, WILL.I.AM, Swizz Beatz and Young Joc, all arist that have the same taste in music and produce the same sort of music that Chris Brown produces. The way the cover-lines are written shows that the this magazine is focusing on the future of the music industry in America, and this indicates that the American music industry will be dominate for many year to come.
Target Audience: This magazine clearly targets young people and teenagers of both genders. However it could also target anyone who has a taste in R’n’B and likes this sort of American culture.
